Understanding Goal Categories in Reflektive

Company administrators often expect self-service controls over taxonomy and organizational labels within their HR and performance software. In Reflektive, however, admins cannot directly create, edit, or delete Goal Categories from the front-end administrative settings dashboard. Instead, organizations must submit changes through Reflektive’s Support team or their dedicated Customer Success Manager (CSM).

Goal categories serve as standardized, company-wide classifications that allow employees and managers to organize objectives by focus area—such as Strategic Growth, Operational Excellence, Core Job Responsibilities, or Professional Development.

Unlike Personal Tags (which individual users can create and apply freely to track distinct projects or personal milestones), Goal Categories represent formal taxonomy used across the entire organization. They facilitate high-level reporting, segment alignment dashboards, and ensure standard terminology across departments.

Why Self-Service Category Management Is Restricted

The absence of an in-app administrative UI for goal categories is intentional within Reflektive's system architecture, serving a few operational functions:

  1. Taxonomy Governance: Restricting direct manipulation prevents individual administrators from accidentally modifying, duplicating, or removing active categories that other teams rely on for company-wide reporting.

  2. Database Integrity & Historical Alignment: Performance reviews and check-ins often pull historical goal data. Renaming or deleting an existing category without backend mapping can orphan legacy goals or skew historical analytics.

  3. Controlled Rollouts: Changes to company-wide goal structures typically coincide with broader review cycles or quarter transitions, where Reflektive's support engineers can ensure metadata consistency across the platform.

How Administrators Can Update Goal Categories

Because there is no self-serve option in the admin settings panel, altering goal categories requires a structured request:

  1. Establish Organizational Consensus: Finalize the exact list of categories internally with HR leadership and people operations before submitting. Keep labels concise, distinct, and universally applicable.

  2. Submit a Request:

    • Via Customer Support: Open a ticket through the Reflektive Support portal or email support at support@reflektive.com .

    • Via Customer Success: Reach out directly to your assigned CSM during your review cycle onboarding or quarterly planning.

  3. Provide Clear Migration Instructions: If you are updating existing categories rather than adding new ones, specify whether legacy goals should be re-mapped to a new category or preserved under the legacy classification.

Administrative Best Practices

  • Batch Requests Ahead of Cycle Launches: To prevent disruption while employees are drafting objectives, submit category changes at least 1–2 weeks before launching a new goal-setting period.

  • Distinguish Categories from Tags: Remind managers and contributors that Goal Categories are fixed, company-level pillars. If a team needs ad-hoc tracking for a temporary project or specific initiative, they should use Reflektive's flexible tagging features rather than requesting a new permanent category.
