Before diving into what an Engagement Survey is, it's important to define and recognize what Employee Engagement is.
In short, Employee Engagement is how much energy your employees bring to work:
- With a more energetic workforce, employers can drive better business outcomes
- Engagement can be measured with questions on anticipated tenure, discretionary effort, and likelihood of recommending
Now, we should also define what Employee Engagement isn't:
-
Employee engagement does not mean employee happiness. Someone might be happy at work, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are working hard, productively on behalf of the organization. While company perks (think catered food, benefits, and social outings) may be beneficial for other reasons, making employees happy is different from making them engaged.
- Employee engagement doesn't mean employee satisfaction. Many companies have "employee satisfaction" surveys and executives talk about "employee satisfaction", but the bar is set too low. A satisfied employee might show up for roles without complaint. But that same "satisfied" employee might not go the extra effort on their own, and they may be enticed to pursue other opportunities with just a 10% bump in pay. Satisfaction isn't always enough.
Thus, we end up with this definition: Employee engagement is the emotional commitment the employee has to the organization and its goals. This emotional commitment means engaged employees actually care about their work and their company. They don't work just for a paycheck, or just for the next promotion, but work on behalf of the organization's goals.

The main aim of conducting an employee engagement survey is to find out the factors that actually drive employees to perform their best and also the ones that can put them off. It is important in order to establish sync between what top management offers and what employees expect or vice versa. Reflektive's Engagement tool will allow you to do this in an easy and repeatable way.
